Manure is usually dug into the soil during the routine winter digging of any land not carrying overwintering crops, or it may be applied in spring as a surface mulch around roses, fruit bushes and other plants. If left on or near the surface, some nutrients move down through the soil to the roots too slowly to be of immediate use.
